Paul joined Gatecrash Theatre last year and since then has played a drunken Morris dancer in their production of Jez Butterworth’s ‘Jerusalem’. Paul also co-designed their most recent production (beyond The Passion) ‘Breathing Corpses‘. On his performance in Jerusalem Paul notes that it was a great experience and the first performance he had been in since leaving school many moons ago, “I enjoyed the process enormously”.
Paul wanted to continue to pursue his passion ( see what I did there! ) to learn to be a better performer so he felt it seemed a logical next step that he should audition for The Passion, although having said that the two plays and the two characters could not be anymore different!
Paul is playing Caiaphas, the High Priest, probably the least likeable character in the story! Caiaphas is not at all happy that Jesus has come along and upset the order in which he has a very comfortable position and it is his mission to collude with any characters that he can get on his side to bring Jesus to trial and ultimately be rid of him and his followers.
Paul is very excited to be part of such a large scale project and to meet and work with people in the community from all walks of life, every rehearsal brings us new perspectives on how to interpret the story of Jesus and in turn rewards us as we are all learning so much about each other and how to work as a whole through the direction of Anna, Jamie and all in the incredible production team.
Paul notes that “rehearsals are going really well, this role is very challenging, I’m way out of my comfort zone, and that’s a good place to be!”
